Eur(elle)’s new album is out on Monday
Dublin songwriter and musician eur(elle), who plays a show at Whelan’s tomorrow night, 27th June, launches his debut album ‘Dark Chromatic’ on 1st July 2019.
Aka Neil Eurelle, the artist tells his own story here:
In October 2017 I was refused entry to the U.S. at the Immigration & Border Control desk in Dublin Airport. My friends & I, collectively known as Empire Circus, were scheduled to record five songs that coming week in Brooklyn with Bryce Goggin which would effectively finish our proposed new album. To make a long story short, we didn’t have the correct paperwork for entry to “record & create” in the U.S. and Immigration Officer Diaz turned us away.
Don’t get me wrong, he was ever so nice and gave us every opportunity to get our paperwork in order but time & money were against us. We forfeited our trip and pressed the pause button on the Empire Circus tape machine.
Broken hearted, the band went on hiatus.
I had a bunch of songs I had been working on, none of which were contenders for a new E.C. record because my songs are very different from the Alt-Rock vibe the band was creating. I was doing a lot of experimental recording at home with some new programmes and equipment I had purchased. I found myself delving into a more modern, less guitar driven sound palette. The songs were slightly more pop…… I think. I’m not sure how describe it. Indie Folk Pop, maybe? I don’t know. I sing and I write songs. Call it whatever you feel it is!
I asked my band mates if they would be cool with me releasing some solo material while the band figured out what to do, and with their blessing, I started work.
During the winter of 2017 – 2018 I comfortably worked in my own studio at home and was loving the whole process. Two songs turned into four, then seven. When songs got to a level I was happy with, I aired them out in the Irish countryside with Martin Quinn of Jam Studios.
His contribution was immense. We re-recorded some parts, kept a lot of my home studio work, captured better vocal performances and together with his brother Andrew on drums, we completed 11 tracks over dotted recording sessions during a few short months.
I emerged with “Dark Chromatic”, my song book of 11 tracks covering subjects such as; friendship, family, death, love, mental health struggles, rebirth, contentment, denial and total disorientation.
Like the subject list above, this album may not easily be genre defined but I think it makes for a good playlist.
It’s the soundtrack to my life over the last few years.
In a sea full of dilettantes and musical buccaneers, this is as real as I get. I hope it connects with you.
