Mercurius Forebrain is a trio of musicians and songwriters originally from the Ballina area, but now based away from Mayo.
The trio has just released a five-track EP called ‘Mocking the Apocalypse’, available for free at https://mercuriusforebrain.bandcamp.com/album/mocking-the-apocalypse
According to their Bandcamp profile the threesome “………..make sounds like Christy Moore being remotely controlled by Philip K Dick, in a haunted ballroom in the bog”.
While their lyrics require careful, if not endless, analysis, the music is edgy and superbly played, with a lot of technical wizardry in the recording! A favourite of mine is ‘The Return of Fat Face’.
A further Bandcamp browse reveals that “They make rhythms with excavated bones. Larynges and mouths project the sounds of old horses and wind on a tin roof. The bass heart beats to a Waiting-for-Godot-groove.”
