Last summer, Cathal Connolly’s energetic and likeable debut single WUGO attracted some commentary for its close shave with expletives!
The lyrics of the Knockmore man’s newly released single ‘Jealous’ are now set to attract further deliberation.
Cathal’s latest song reveals a terrifying narrative where a jealous ex wishes the worst things possible on his former partner, going so far as to desire scratches on all her vinyls!
Thankfully, the real-life Cathal has a great sense of humour.
“Many lessons were learned from the first single,” said Cathal. “One being that songs with swear words are harder to get on the radio…but I could not be happier with the release.
Jealous is the second single to come from his forthcoming debut album.
Cathal, who, under his real name Cathal Faughnan, is Director of The Core at Ballina Arts Centre, was blown away by the kind response to WUGO.
“The troops rallied and fifteen friends showed up to a pub in Foxford to record the music video,” he said.
From Knockmore, near Ballina, Cathal studied music at the Dundalk Institute of Technology Music School.
Jealous, which was released last week, features several top class musicians. These include Zoë Conway on violin. Zoë was RTE Folk Instrumentalist of the Year in 2019 and has worked with the RTE Concert Orchestra. Caoi DeBarra of Wyvern Lingo plays drums.
Cathal writes and plays art-pop and folk music and lists among his musical influences Sufjan Stevens, The National and Nine Inch Nails.
He is currently preparing for a headline show in Ballina Arts Centre on 10th November, his first.
Jealous is the second song from his forthcoming debut album, which will be released at the end of April 2024.
“I struggled massively with anxiety in my 20’s and dedicated the whole decade to improving my craft,” said Cathal. “I said I wouldn’t release music until I was ready. I finally believe I am ready”.
