The Third Rehearsal is an instrumental project by two musicians from the West of Ireland, Patrick Hallinan and Kevin Donnellan.
Nothing I was Thinking is the debut release from the pair, originally from Ballina.
Minimalist in style, in Nothing I was Thinking we hear Kevin’s haunting fiddle playing shadowed by Patrick’s subtle backing.
The instrumental piece, which sees the pair pursue some earthly goodness through their music, has a therapeutic quality that bodes well for the forthcoming long player, due out in August.
The music started as a voyage of improvised guitar and violin, eventually brewing into a soft texture of ambient sounds, keys, electronica and percussion.
Both musicians have been active on the local music scene, in various guises, over the last 20 years.
Their next collaboration Two Moons will explore the sacred nature of the land.
Patrick and Kevin explain: “The term ‘human’ is said to originate from the word ‘humus’, meaning ‘of the earth’. We hold a shared molecular memory with the land, through our mutual elements.
“Music roots us into the ancient and mysterious, down into the soul, where human and earth meet.”
When you do get to savour the brew that is Two Moons expect it to taste strongly of the mythical energy that permeates Co. Sligo.
The video for the single was shot by one of the west’s most creative young film makers. Fionn Rogers, at the Devil’s Chimney, near Glencar, Co. Sligo.
Nothing I was Thinking, the opening song from this self-produced and recorded debut, was released today, Friday, May 15th 2020.
